About Johnston Iowa
North of Iowa's capital city Des Moines is the sprawling suburban city of Johnston, Polk County. Having a current population of 22,040 as recorded in the 2018 census, it has been steadily growing due to favorable conditions offered by this former railway community.
After being given many names since settlers came to this area in 1846, it was established in 1905 as a railway station that was situated between Central Des Moines and Perry. It then was named Johnston Station after its freight supervisor John F. Johnston. When the railroad service was ended in 1949, the track was then removed from the city limits. The city was finally incorporated in 1969, and at that time just had a total population of 2,236 residents.
Fast forward to January 7, 2019, Mayor Paula Dierenfeld presided over Johnston Iowa's first city council meeting on the city’s 50th birthday.
Also, located in this city is the historic Camp Dodge. Serving as the headquarters of the National Iowa Guard, this military installation and training center was established in the area in 1908. The camp sits on 4,500 acres of land and was named in honor of General Grenville Dodge, a civil war vet.
This city is also home to historical economic sites which began and thrived here. The Pioneer Hi-bred Corn Company which later became the leading seed corn producer in the world was successfully built in Johnston Iowa. Incidentally, it still is operating and going strong today. Its accomplishment attracted many residents and other businesses that currently make up the thriving and balanced economic landscape of this suburban town.
Pioneer Hi-bred which later became known as Corteva, now employs more than 2,000 people and is a major contributor to the city’s economic prosperity. Also headquartered in Johnston is the Des Moines Weather Forecast Office of the National Weather Service. This, and along with 60 other major companies related to insurance and agriculture.
Johnston Iowa is currently known and awarded for the excellent quality of life that it affords its residents. With its vast recreational facilities, 40 miles of trails, many national and city parks, a responsive government, and thriving businesses, have earned it the “16th Best Place to Live in America Award". The award was given by Money Magazine in 2015.
The city also boasts of an excellent education system, in which Johnston High School is producing one of the highest levels of proficiency while maintaining an impressive 96% graduated rate of students in the state.
Johnston City’s low cost of living, safe environment, trail systems, and well-established home values, make it one of the most desirable places to live in the country today.
