A Quick Fact about Roof Repair - The roof is your home's first line of defense against the outside elements, including sun rays, moisture penetration and wind damage. It also provides protection from falling debris flying off other buildings in a storm or creeping into your attic through vents or skylights due to missing roof shingles or bad flashing. Typically roof repairs are carried out by replacing old damaged roofing materials or roof flashing.
Roof repairs go beyond shingles. They may include replacing roof framing, roof decking, and roof covering. Other roof repairs require roof painting, roof mold repair, and repairing damaged roof vents. Roofers must have the necessary insurance to ensure that they are able to help you with any of these problems your house may be experiencing. The roofing experts at Top Notch Construction & Roofings will help you with any and all of their roof repairs.
If your roof is in need of repair, quick action must be taken to prevent further damage. Waiting until the rains start will only make matters worse. Taking care of home repairs early can save you money in the long run and help protect yourself against damages caused by rain leaks, wind damage, and other weather conditions that come with a damaged roof.
Roofing Repairs - The Most Common Roof Problems :
The most common causes of cracked shingles are:
• Tree debris hitting your roof.
• Over time all roofs lose their ability to withstand environmental factors such as wind, sun and hail storms, etc..
• The biggest problem that I have seen over the years is water intrusion because of incorrect flashing or shingle sealing. • Insufficient ventilation which can lead to attic fire.
The most common causes of leaking roofs are:
• Windstorm damage - storms are the result of high winds that blow branches onto your roof. It is very common for shingles to be lifted by high winds and cause water infiltration into your home. The branches strike the roof, lifting up shingles causing penetration points for water in the form of a leak. You may also find missing shingles and loose roof deck flashing due to windstorms as well as warped or damaged wood porch/deck framing from excessive moisture exposure in areas where homes are not properly sealed from rain and snow infiltration.
• Roots - tree roots can grow into the roof structure of a home and cause major leaks that need to be repaired. As roots grow they can penetrate your roof's inner layers weakening them.
• And lastly, improper roof maintenance/roofing repairs.

Below: A leaking roof is a terrible experience. Often times it leads to damages that can add up quickly. This home in Ames Iowa had water damage due to a bad roof repair from an inexperienced contractor. The plywood deck below this shingle was completely delaminated giving way for water infiltration into the home's attic/crawlspace. It took over 6 months to complete repairs because of the extensive renovations involved in this case, including removing existing insulation (which was not correctly installed), replacing ceiling joists, framing walls, leveling flooring, etc... We replaced the roof and performed a complete re-insulation of the home. Also, we were able to rebuild our back deck which was damaged by water infiltration from rainwater that had nowhere to go but down!
Below: This roof in Ames Iowa had been leaking for quite some time. We fixed this roof by removing all shingles and lifting up pipes flashing around the perimeter of the home. We then installed new self-cleaning titanium valley piping flashing with metal screw fasteners. We then applied elastomeric asphalt membrane to the entire roof deck followed by 8lb felt paper application as well as 5/8" modified bitumen premium quality rubberized asphalt shingles.
About Johnston Iowa
North of Iowa's capital city Des Moines is the sprawling suburban city of Johnston, Polk County. Having a current population of 22,040 as recorded in the 2018 census, it has been steadily growing due to favorable conditions offered by this former railway community.
After being given many names since settlers came to this area in 1846, it was established in 1905 as a railway station that was situated between Central Des Moines and Perry. It then was named Johnston Station after its freight supervisor John F. Johnston. When the railroad service was ended in 1949, the track was then removed from the city limits. The city was finally incorporated in 1969, and at that time just had a total population of 2,236 residents.
Fast forward to January 7, 2019, Mayor Paula Dierenfeld presided over Johnston Iowa's first city council meeting on the city’s 50th birthday.
Also, located in this city is the historic Camp Dodge. Serving as the headquarters of the National Iowa Guard, this military installation and training center was established in the area in 1908. The camp sits on 4,500 acres of land and was named in honor of General Grenville Dodge, a civil war vet.
This city is also home to historical economic sites which began and thrived here. The Pioneer Hi-bred Corn Company which later became the leading seed corn producer in the world was successfully built in Johnston Iowa. Incidentally, it still is operating and going strong today. Its accomplishment attracted many residents and other businesses that currently make up the thriving and balanced economic landscape of this suburban town.
Pioneer Hi-bred which later became known as Corteva, now employs more than 2,000 people and is a major contributor to the city’s economic prosperity. Also headquartered in Johnston is the Des Moines Weather Forecast Office of the National Weather Service. This, and along with 60 other major companies related to insurance and agriculture.
Johnston Iowa is currently known and awarded for the excellent quality of life that it affords its residents. The award was given by Money Magazine in 2015.
The city also boasts of an excellent education system, in which Johnston High School is producing one of the highest levels of proficiency while maintaining an impressive 96% graduated rate of students in the state.
